2024年7月にリリースされた「十和田湖 梅雨」に続き、ニック・ウッドとSynが北日本の季節をサウンドにした十和田湖シリーズの第3章「十和田湖 夏」をリリースしました。

この長編サウンドスケープシリーズは、日本の北部に位置する十和田湖の閑静な湖畔に見られる季節の変化を記録し、自然環境のサウンドと共にゲストミュージシャンによるライブ演奏が収録されています。
本シリーズは、日本に36年以上住んでいる作曲家兼Synのクリエイティブディレクターのニック・ウッドによるアイデア。ニックと彼のクリエイティブチームは、十和田湖のスタジオから日本の伝統的な祭りの季節である夏に敬意を表して過去、現在、そして未来の夏に対するポジティブな気持ちを音楽で表現しました。
ニックとチームは、十和田湖の四季折々の自然美を捉えるために2年間にわたりフィールドレコーディング（屋外録音）を行いました。植物の微小な電気信号をMIDI（ミディ・楽器用デジタルインターフェース）に変換するデバイス「PlantWave」を用いて植物のエネルギーを曲に取り入れるなど、最先端の技術を使用してメディテーショナルな体験ができるサウンドを制作したのです。最終段階でDolby Atmosでミックスされた「十和田湖 夏」は立体的なサウンドに仕上がりました。
さらに、クリエイティブなコラボレーターたちがこの自然のサウンドを感情豊かな作品へと導きます。シンプルなリフレインの和音に始まり、ニック・ウッドはこの「十和田湖 夏」のハーモニーの基盤をナイロンギターで表現するために、グラミー賞ノミネート歴のあるギタリストのギャン・ライリーにオファーし、繊細でアコースティックなプレイを作品に加えました。日本人ボーカリストの柳ひろみは、東京の街が見渡せるニック・ウッドのスタジオで、まるで母なる自然を擬人化したかのように息遣いが感じらせる幻想的なボーカルを重ね、ピアニストのアレクサンドル・モトヴィロフの柔らかなピアノの音色が優雅に響きます。
こうして「十和田湖 夏」は、ロサンゼルスのエンジニア、デビッド・レヴィンによりDolby Atmosでミックスされ、8月24日に世界配信スタート。このリリースは、8月28日に東京で行われる高級オーディオブランドKEFとのパートナーシップによる「An Evening with Nick Wood」でも発表されます。

Experience the natural beauty of Japan through sound with
‘Towadako Summer’, the third chapter in Nick Wood’s Towadako Series.
Following the release of ‘Towadako Rain’ in July 2024, the third chapter in Nick Wood and Syn’s seasonal tribute to Northern Japan continues with the release of ‘Towadako Summer’. These long form ambient soundscapes lovingly document the seasonal changes found along the tranquil shoreline of Lake Towada in Honshu, Northern Japan, capturing the sounds of the natural environment alongside guest features from live musicians.
The ‘Towadako Series’ is the brainchild of composer and Syn creative director, Nick Wood, who has spent over 36 years living in Japan. From his lakeside studio in Lake Towada, Nick and his team pay tribute to this traditionally festive season in Japan, committing to music this short season which shares a sense of optimism, positivity and a reflection on Summers past, present and future.
Nick and his team spent two years conducting field recordings to capture the natural beauty of Lake Towada throughout the seasons. The team also used cutting-edge technology to create a truly immersive and meditative experience. The team used a device called PlantWave, which can read the electrical signals emitted from organic matter and convert it into MIDI. This allowed them to convert the energy from plants during the seasons into music. The final song was mixed into Dolby Atmos, creating a three-dimensional auditory experience.
Creative collaborators helped fused the natural sounds into an emotive final work. Starting with a repeating motif of simple, chordal melody, Nick Wood looked to Grammy-nominated guitarist Gyan Riley to interpret this harmonic foundation of ‘Towadako Summer’ on Nylon guitar, contributing delicate, acoustic instrumentation to the ambient piece. Japanese vocalist Hiromi Yanagi contributed vocals, recorded at Nick Wood’s Tokyo studio overlooking the city, layering breathy, ethereal vocals in an implied personification of Mother Nature. Pianist, Alexander Motovilov, recorded an upright, soft-felt piano, intimately recorded to celebrate the instruments imperfections.
‘Towadako Summer’ was mixed in Dolby Atmos by engineer David Levin in Los Angeles, and will be available globally on Spotify and Apple Music from August 24th. The release will be marked by ‘an evening with Nick Wood’, in partnership with high-end audio brand KEF, on August 28th in Tokyo.
